How will premarital counseling help my relationship?

Every relationship has rules and agreements.

As your intimacy deepens, conflicts will arise. Deciding early in the relationship what your shared values are and how to respect differences can keep you from spending years in harmful patterns. Premarital counseling can help you with the following:

  • Effective communication

  • Mutual respect

  • Trust and honesty

  • Healthy boundaries

  • Conflict resolution

  • Emotional support

  • Independence/interdependence

  • Equality/partnership

  • Physical and emotional safety

  • Compatibility

  • Future planning

  • Financial planning

  • Intimacy and sexuality

  • Adapting to life changes

  • Joy and happiness

  • Healthy and continued courtship

Georgia couples who receive at least six hours of premarital counseling before filing for their marriage license can receive a discount on their license fee. After you have met the requirements, your therapist can provide you with a signed State Certification Form. We draw from a variety of techniques for premarital counseling including the Gottman method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Imago Relationship Therapy, and Prepare/Enrich.
